Pre-Build Validation 2: Solution Direction (Concept Tests Without a Product)?

You do not need a working product to test solution direction. You need a clear verbal description of three to five different approaches to solving the validated problem. This is concept testing before anyone has written a spec, let alone code.

The approaches should differ meaningfully. Do not run a concept test with three variations of the same idea. Test genuinely different angles: a tool approach versus a service approach, a self-serve versus assisted model, an automation-first versus recommendation-first posture. The purpose is to learn which frame of the solution resonates, not to get detailed feedback on a predetermined answer.

Recruit 10-15 fresh interviews in the same target segment. Present each concept as a short verbal description, about 60-90 seconds. Rotate the order across interviews to control for primacy effects. After each concept, ask the same three questions: what does this mean to you in your own words (tests whether the concept is even legible), how likely are you to use this on a 1-10 scale, and what concerns come up first.

The pattern you are looking for across the full sample: one approach clearly pulling ahead on likelihood, with the top concerns being objections you can address rather than fundamental dealbreakers. A result where all three concepts cluster in the middle is informative. It usually means the problem is real but the value proposition is not yet crisp enough for any solution to land. A result where one concept wins decisively is the signal to build that one.

The pre-build output of this validation is a one-page product specification: the validated problem, the winning solution frame, the top three objections you will need to address in the actual build, and the specific language your target users used to describe both the problem and the desired outcome. That language is the seed of your landing page copy, onboarding flow, and initial positioning. It is worth more than the build plan that comes after.

Pre-Build Validation 3: Willingness-to-Pay Bands?

The third validation is the one bootstrapped founders skip most often, usually because they believe they will figure out pricing after launch. That belief is expensive. Pricing frames the entire build. A product that needs $100/month per customer to work economically is a different product from one that needs $10/month. You should know which one you are building before you start.

Run 10 more interviews in the target segment with a verbal description of the winning solution concept. Use Van Westendorp’s four-question price sensitivity method: at what price would this be so expensive you would not consider it, at what price would it start to feel expensive but you might still buy, at what price would it feel like a good deal, at what price would it be so cheap you would question the quality. The four responses plot into an acceptable price range.

Complement this with reference anchors. Ask what participants currently spend on workarounds. If people are paying $50/month for a tool that partially solves the problem, your acceptable price band will reference that number. If people are paying nothing because they are living with the pain, your band is bounded by the effort-to-value calculation of switching from nothing to something.

The decision rule: if the 10-interview acceptable price band supports your unit economics at realistic conversion and churn rates, proceed. If the band clears nowhere near what you need to make the business work, stop. Either the problem is not monetizable at the scale you assumed, or the solution frame you chose has a lower willingness-to-pay ceiling than a different frame would. Re-run solution validation with alternative concepts if the willingness-to-pay gate fails. Do not proceed to build hoping you will figure out a premium tier later.

When You’ve Validated Enough to Build (and When You Haven’t)
