Every insights team eventually builds a dashboard. And most of those dashboards fail — not because the data is wrong, but because the metrics are wrong. Insight-to-decision conversion rate. Of the insight statements produced in the last quarter, how many were explicitly cited in a product, marketing, or strategy decision? This metric requires tracking the downstream usage of research outputs — which means the research team needs to follow up with stakeholders after delivering findings. A healthy rate is 40-60% of primary insights influencing a documented decision within 90 days.
Hypothesis validation rate. Of the hypotheses the team held at the beginning of the quarter, how many were validated, invalidated, or modified by research? A rate that is consistently above 80% validation suggests either remarkably accurate intuition or — more likely — research that is designed to confirm rather than test. A healthy validation rate is 50-70%, indicating that the team is testing genuine uncertainties rather than seeking reassurance.
Knowledge freshness index. For each critical topic area (e.g., purchase drivers, churn motivations, competitive positioning, pricing sensitivity), track when the most recent research was conducted.
