Minimum score: Use the lowest score at the account as the account-level NPS. This is more conservative but more operationally useful because it highlights the role group most at risk. The common mistake is deploying NPS immediately after a specific interaction, which biases the response toward that interaction rather than capturing the overall relationship. If a customer receives an NPS survey 10 minutes after a frustrating support call, their response reflects the support experience, not their holistic brand relationship.

Combining CSAT and NPS

The most informative B2C satisfaction program runs both metrics in parallel. CSAT at key touchpoints provides operational diagnostic data. Mitigation: Optimize delivery timing based on engagement data. Send surveys at times when your customers typically interact with your product. Keep the survey brutally short. Consider in-app surveys triggered by usage milestones rather than email-based surveys that compete for inbox attention.

Negative selection bias. In B2C, respondents who bother to complete satisfaction surveys tend to skew toward the extremes: very satisfied customers who want to express support and very dissatisfied customers who want to express frustration. The moderate middle, the passives and mild promoters, are underrepresented.

Mitigation: Monitor your score distribution alongside response rates. If passives are consistently underrepresented in your response pool, your NPS may be artificially polarized. Three common mistakes in benchmark usage:
