Users are more capable than your design, compensating for poor affordances through determination or expertise. This pattern is particularly dangerous because completion metrics mask usability problems. Your power users succeed while your new users churn.
Pattern four: positive feedback, negative behavior. Users praise a feature in interviews but rarely use it in practice. This reflects social desirability bias, the gap between intended and actual behavior, or features that sound good but don't integrate into real workflows. Users want to be the kind of person who uses your advanced analytics dashboard, but they're actually the kind of person who glances at summary metrics once a week.
Each pattern demands different action. High usage with low satisfaction needs competitive analysis and switching cost evaluation. Low usage with high satisfaction needs segmentation and positioning refinement. Successful outcomes with painful processes need usability investment. Positive feedback with negative behavior needs workflow integration analysis.
The most effective triangulation happens by design, not as a reconciliation exercise after contradictions emerge. Structure research programs to generate complementary datasets that interrogate each other continuously.
